Events 2008
March/April - Magnolia Place Wine Paring Dinner by the Fire.
Our first wine paring dinner in March of 2007 was a success judging by the quickly filled reservations, Chef ‘Scot’ of Stonecat Café’s outstanding cuisine, vintner ‘Phil’ of Damiani Wine Cellars’’ reserves, introducing for the first time his ‘sparkling wine’, and concluding with our dinner guests’ exclamations of “…we can’t WAIT for this event next year!”. Please e-mail or call periodically for a confirmed ‘dinner date’ at Magnolia Place.
March 29 & 30 - Cruisin’ the Tropics Wine Weekend
Retreat to tropical? Seneca Lake wineries and their gone-mad-for-the-tropics themes. Hawaiian shirts, flowered leis, and straw hats are a sight to behold in upstate New York’s less-than-tropic weather. No worries…wine, islands food, and a contest prize will set the scene for a laid back time where it’s always 5:00 somewhere.
April 26 & 27 - Wine and Cheese Weekend
THE perfect paring of wine and cheeses from McCadam Cheese Company and 34 participating Seneca wineries will entice all wine connoisseurs and the newly initiated alike to the amazing array of cheeses. Vibrant to mellow cheeses that will pique the taste buds, in appreciating the finesse of the variety of Seneca Lake award winning red and white wines that the surrounding hillside vineyards produce.
April Showers and May Flowers…If you want to throw a Shower one of the other three weekends of April, or non-event weekend in May…tell us what you’d like (caterer, flowers, wine tour transportation) and we will Shower the bride-to-be and guests with a beautiful intimate celebration as a memorable prelude to the wedding.
Friday, May 30 & Saturday 31 Golden Nose Award Event
Speaking of wine connoisseurs, what do wine judges know that we don’t? In art museum settings this event teaches the ‘fine art’ of wine judging. Held at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art and the Corning Museum of Glass, this event culminates with dinner, wine, and the winner of the Golden Nose, at the Corning Museum of Glass Saturday evening. www.cmog.org
April - Polar Bear Plunge
OK so it’s not New Years Day where some crazy people traditionally plunge in waters somewhere in really really cold weather. However, those in the know about Seneca Lake can verify that Seneca itself is really really COLD year around. In part 600 feet deep and a couple of miles wide, this glacier carved lake never freezes. Stay at Magnolia Place where your biggest plunge is into our Jacuzzis. Usually the Polar Bear Event is the last weekend of April but please call Anchor Inn and Marina before you take the ‘plunge’. 607-535-4159

For Passport info www.senecalakewinetrail.com.
June 8 - Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen
Watkins Glen International race car track hosts this Sports Car Series event. WGI’s race car traditions stem from the ‘early’ Grand Prix races with legends like Nikki Lauda, Mario Andretti, and Mark Donahue. The 1952 built road course on the ‘hill’ retains the twists and turns but has added huge upgrades over the years and installed state of the art communications. For WGI schedules, tickets and info visit www.theglen.com During down time (no scheduled events) at WGI, in a “vehicle with 4 wheels” and $30.00 per car, you as well, can get the ‘feel’ of racing car greats, as you take the turns and straights for three laps at the ‘The Glen’.
July 5 & 6 - IndyCar Series at ‘The Glen’
Fast, sleek, and high-pitched, Indy Cars are simply the finest in racing on American road courses, in Grand Prix tradition, for speed in the straights and handling in the corners, as well as the ‘oval’. This year marks the 4th exciting season at ‘The Glen’ for Indy Cars.
July 19 & 20 - Finger Lakes Wine Festival at WGI
Over a hundred Wineries from the five Finger Lakes and beyond are ready to enthrall and delight with food, wine, music, goodies to buy and fun. Magnolia Place will advise and help arrange the short distance to the WGI race track. At the end of the festivities, come back to the peace and tranquility of your beautiful room, indulging in a romantic Jacuzzi before falling asleep with visions of Bacchus in your head. He would be SO proud!
August 9 & 10 - NASCAR and Centurion Boats at ‘The Glen’
In the genre of race cars, this is the granddaddy of American stock car racing. Making the transition from oval tracks to this ‘road course’ is always filled with surprises. From race team baseball hats to race tee shirts to the race fans to the race drivers’ parade to the flyover of Air Force jets, this is a spectacle not to be missed. Book early for bleacher or pit row seating of choice. Last year Centurion Boats became a new sponsor, and again will offer Centurion Boats to ride at Watkins Glen Harbor, at the southern end of Seneca Lake on Friday and Saturday. www.theglen.com
September 5-7th weekend. Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix Festival
Come early on Friday the 5th to catch the sounds of motor racing echoing through the streets and in the hills as it was in ‘The Glen’ from 1948 to 1952 Grand Prix racing. With names like Bugati or USRRC/CanAm or Maserati and Porsche…one doesn’t have to be a ‘race officiando’ to appreciate the design and craft of these motor machines of yesteryear. Three laps through the streets of Watkins Glen and up through the hills, the cars return through historic Milliken’s Corner to race down the main straight, to the finish line. Contact the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen for details www.racingarchives.org The Center has self-directed brochure maps of the original road course circuit through Watkins and the surrounding country side.
